In short

  • AI Max is an optimisation layer on Search campaigns, not a new campaign type and not a Performance Max replacement.
  • Three switches: search term matching, text customisation, final URL expansion — each with a different B2B failure mode.
  • Ads in Google AI Mode are still not buyable in the EU as of November 2026; AI Max is. Clean Search and measurement prepare you for both.
  • Start with an experiment, auto-apply off, and judge on qualified leads — not form fills.
  • Without CRM feedback and clean tracking, “more reach” is mostly more noise.

1. What AI Max is — and is not

According to Google Ads Help, AI Max is a suite of targeting and creative features that runs as a continuous optimisation layer on Search campaigns. You keep your Search structure: campaigns, ad groups, keywords, RSAs. AI Max learns from those assets, your landing pages and real-time signals.

AI Max is not:

  • a new campaign type next to Search or Performance Max;
  • “turn on and forget” without controls;
  • the same as ads in Google AI Mode (still not sold in the EU in November 2026).

AI Max is:

  • broader matching than your manual keywords alone (search term matching);
  • automatically tailored headlines and descriptions (text customisation);
  • optionally: traffic to a more relevant URL on your domain (final URL expansion);
  • extra reporting: match type “AI Max”, source column, combined search term / headline / URL views.

Budget constraint is a hard condition: Google warns AI Max is ineffective when the campaign is chronically limited by budget.

2. The three switches (and where B2B accounts break)

SwitchWhat it doesTypical B2B riskStarting position for lead gen
Search term matchingExpands reach with broad match and keywordless matching from keywords, ads and URLsJob, training, “free” and retail queries that still fill formsOn in a test, with tight negatives
Text customisationBuilds headlines/descriptions from ads, landing pages and generative AIClaims you cannot keep (lead times, “free quote”, certifications)On after preview; review assets weekly
Final URL expansionSends clicks to another page on your domain Google expects to perform betterDemo/RFQ intent lands on blog, careers or docs; tracking template → 404Off first, or on with URL exclusions

Google ties text customisation and URL expansion: URL expansion requires text customisation so ad copy matches the chosen page. Pinned RSA assets are ignored when AI Max picks a more relevant URL.

Since October 2026 many accounts can preview up to about 10 AI-generated headlines and descriptions before turning text customisation on hard. Use that preview: cheaper than walking back claims later.

3. AI Max vs Performance Max vs AI Mode ads

For lead generation in the Netherlands and the wider EU, AI Max is the relevant Search control panel now. AI Mode ads will reward the same hygiene — strong landing pages, clean assets/feeds, Smart Bidding on quality conversions — but you cannot buy them here yet. More on AI in results: Google AI Overviews expand automatically. Channel choice next to Search: ChatGPT Ads vs Google Ads.

4. When to turn AI Max on — and when to wait

Turn AI Max on (as an experiment) when:

  • your Search campaign already converts steadily and is not structurally budget-limited;
  • you optimise to a conversion sales recognises (qualified lead, meeting, opportunity) — not only “form submit”;
  • you have account or campaign negatives for jobs, free, DIY, competitor brands you exclude;
  • there is enough volume to learn after 4–6 weeks plus your sales cycle.

Wait or stay narrow when:

  • Search yields fewer than a handful of qualified leads per month: fix landing page, offer and tracking first;
  • your primary conversion is still every form fill, including spam and students;
  • the site has weak or conflicting pages (old promos, careers, blog posts with “quote” CTAs) URL expansion could pick;
  • your tracking template does not use correct {lpurl} patterns — Google warns about 404s with dynamic landing pages.

5. Checklist before you flip the switch

  1. Conversions: primary = qualified lead or meeting; form fills secondary. Offline or CRM import when sales qualifies later.
  2. Negatives: jobs, internship, salary, free, pdf, template, competitors you exclude; review AI Max search terms weekly.
  3. Brand controls: brand inclusions and exclusions at campaign / ad group level (part of AI Max).
  4. Location: locations of interest at ad group level where geo intent matters; stay sharp on presence vs interest.
  5. Landing pages: one clear conversion page per offer; exclude blog, careers, login and irrelevant docs if URL expansion ever goes on.
  6. Tracking template: use {lpurl}? / {lpurl}& / {lpurl}# as Google advises; test a dynamic landing page before go-live.
  7. Assets: RSAs with factual claims; text guidelines / excluded terms where available; preview AI headlines.
  8. Budget: enough headroom for Smart Bidding + AI Max to learn without daily throttle.

6. A test setup sales will survive

Do not flip AI Max on account-wide. Run a Google Ads experiment on your largest healthy Search campaign:

  1. Arm A: current setup (control).
  2. Arm B: AI Max on; search term matching on; text customisation on after preview; URL expansion off in round 1.
  3. Recommendation auto-apply off.
  4. Duration: at least until sales has qualified leads (often 4–8 weeks + your sales cycle).
  5. Decide on cost per qualified lead / meeting, not form-fill CPA or “more conversions” in Google Ads alone.
  6. Weekly: search terms with AI Max source, generated assets, landing pages (“Selected by” column).

Only consider URL expansion in round 2 — with exclusions and a tracking check. Turning all three switches on at once makes bad leads impossible to diagnose.

7. Full funnel: why AI Max without CRM stays noisy

AI Max widens the surface Google may match. That helps when the “good lead” signal is hard. Without a feedback loop, Google optimises to whatever you call a conversion — and in many accounts that is still a half-empty form.

At Leadverge we wire Search into the same stack as the rest of the growth engine:

  • landing page with one goal and qualification questions;
  • server-side tagging / Consent Mode v2 so conversions return reliably;
  • CRM tagging by source, campaign and quality;
  • sales feedback that feeds primary conversions;
  • scenarios (minimum / okay / best) under a full-funnel growth partnership — we do not steer on vanity CPA.

Google Ads management without that loop can still show AI Max “more leads” nobody calls. The tech is not the problem; the definition of success is.

8. Frequently asked questions

Is AI Max a new campaign type?

No. It is an optimisation layer on existing Search network campaigns. You keep Search campaigns; you toggle AI Max features per campaign (and partly per ad group).

What is the difference between AI Max and Performance Max?

Performance Max is a separate campaign type across Google channels. AI Max optimises Search while you keep the familiar Search structure, with extra controls for brands, locations of interest and URLs.

Do I need AI Max for ads in AI Mode?

Where AI Mode ads are live, they often come from existing Search / Shopping / PMax campaigns; Google cites AI Max and broad match as ways to hit conversational queries. In the EU you still cannot buy AI Mode ads in November 2026. AI Max is useful here to strengthen Search — not as an “AI Mode switch”.

Can AI Max break my landing pages?

Yes, if final URL expansion is on and your tracking template or site URLs are wrong. Google documents 404 risks with bad {lpurl} templates and static tracking URLs. Test first; exclude weak URLs.

Should I optimise to form fills or qualified leads?

Qualified leads or meetings. Form fills as the only primary conversion reward AI Max for reach to anyone who completes a field — including spam. Put quality downstream in your conversion model.

How often should I review AI Max search terms?

Weekly in the first month, then at least every two weeks. Add negatives, remove weak generated assets, and check that URL expansion (if on) sends people to the right pages.
